I am the founder of The Redemptive Call, a not-for-profit organization that was created in response to the growing number of youth who are falling through the cracks in school or are already entangled in destructive behaviors particularly, in my neighborhood. Brownsville, Brooklyn is an urban poverty-stricken neighborhood in New York City with a high crime rate. In addition, it is home to the most housing projects concentrated in a single neighborhood in the entire nation. See pics below. This is my neighborhood.
Growing up in this neighborhood has given me firsthand knowledge of the barriers and challenges that under-served youth face. I am well acquainted with the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness often created by oppressive circumstances and the process it takes to overcome internalized negativity. I am grateful for caring mentors and loving leaders who helped me to see the world, and myself, with a different perspective. This experience is why I'm so passionate about this program making a difference in young people's lives and impacting communities for generations.
